6 Games to Watch this Week 1 NCAA Football

DANNY JACOBSON

Last week we had a small sampling of games to wet our collective whistle in preparation for this week’s feastings of college football.  Last week there were only five games.  This week there are 87 different games.  Welcome back officially, football!   Here are the 6 games that you should keep an eye on during the “Real Week 1.”

6.    Brigham Young @ Louisiana State

Saturday, Sept. 2, 9:30 pm ET

    Mercedes-Benz Superdome, New Orleans, LA

    ESPN

First off, prayers, blessings, well wishes and everything else to the people affected by Hurricane Harvey.  This has been a trying time for the entire region and I sincerely hope that everything turns out ok.  This game was supposed to be played in Houston but has moved to New Orleans in the wake of this natural disaster.

For the game itself, BYU played a lackluster game last week against FCS Portland St.  However, they played a lot of players and got some valuable experience before this week’s game against powerhouse LSU.  This game for the Cougars is a huge game that could announce them as a team to be reckoned with this season.  For LSU, this is the first official game for head coach Ed Orgeron.  They need to have a good showing against a physical BYU squad if they want to make noise in the SEC this season.  This should be a tough, defensive battle between two hard-nosed teams.

Prediction- Louisiana State 24, Brigham Young 17

5.    Tennessee (0-0) @ Georgia Tech (0-0)

Monday, Sept. 4, 8:00 pm ET

    Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Atlanta, GA

    ESPN

Both teams start new QBs.  Both teams had disappointing seasons last year and are looking to take a step forward this season.  This is the only game being played on Monday so all eyes will be on this game.  Will the triple option pay dividends for Georgia Tech or will the hype train that has surrounded the last few draft classes will finally come to the station?  Both teams need this game and it should be a good one.

Prediction- Tennessee 24, Georgia Tech 21

4.    West Virginia (0-0) @ Virginia Tech (0-0)

Sunday, Sept. 3, 7:30 pm ET

    FedEx Field, Landover, MD

    ABC

West Virginia had a fantastic offense last season and should again this year.  Virginia Tech lost its starting QB to the NFL but have a really exciting redshirt freshman QB in Josh Jackson.  This game has the makings of a shootout between two teams that are being overlooked in their respective conferences and leagues.

Prediction- Virginia Tech 35, West Virginia 31

3.    Texas A&M (0-0) @ UCLA (0-0)

Sunday, Sept. 3, 7:30 pm ET

    Rose Bowl, Los Angeles, CA

    FOX

With all of the turmoil going on in Texas, this game will be a welcome relief for the Texas A&M players.  It will be a good distraction for them to go to California and play against someone else besides their teammate.  The problem is they are going up against Josh Rosen and the UCLA offense.  They should be solid as long as they can remain healthy.  Both coaches are feeling their seats get a little warm and need to get a big win against a big name opponent to cool them off.

    Prediction- UCLA 35, Texas A&M 32

2.    Michigan (0-0) @ Florida (0-0)

Saturday, Sept. 2, 3:30 pm ET

    AT&T Stadium, Arlington, TX

    ABC

This game has the makings of a possible College Football Playoff eliminator.  This is a marquee game the first week of the season that is a huge resume builder.  It’s not quite a deal breaker for the losing team but the winning team needs it to get to the playoffs this season.  Both teams have heaps of talent.  Both teams have high expectations.  Expect both of these teams to leave it all on the table lead by their defenses.  The offenses may struggle because of the defenses but it will be a fun game.

    Prediction- Michigan 17, Florida 14

1.    Florida State (0-0) @ Alabama (0-0)

Saturday, Sept. 2, 8:00 pm ET

    Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Atlanta, GA

    ABC

This game is just what we have all been waiting for since last season ended.  This is a matchup of two titans in the college football world.  On one side we have the Crimson Tide dynasty rolling into Georgia looking to make a statement.  On the other we have what may just be the most talented team in the nation in Florida State.  This game has a good chance to even be played a second time this season come January.  While this game could be one of the very best of the season, Alabama has scheduled big name opponents each of the last five years and come out victorious.  This season will be the same thing.

Prediction- Alabama 33, Florida State 23
