The Best Twitter Trolls In The World Of Sports

ADAM CENROE

Ever since the advent of social media, opinion has been divided as to what it actually brings to the table. One of the best parts of social media is that it allows us to get ever-closer to the kind of people who we adore; athletes, for example. However, social media gives us the chance to interact with athletes in both a positive and a negative manner.

Not sure what we mean? Let’s take a look at some of the times when athletes have taken to social media to troll others. Most of them are funny and meant in a good-natured way, but some of them got pretty intense quite quickly!

Kevin Durant and Twitter Secrecy. One of the prime examples of this was Kevin Durant. The Basketball star got into a lot of heat when he decided to leave Oklahoma City Thunder to go join the Warriors. This led to many abusive tweets and arguments. Durant then starting defending himself on Twitter, thinking he was on one of his ‘alt’ accounts. He clearly either speaks in the third person, or forgot to change to his sub account when he defended himself, posting as himself!

Enes Kanter and LeBron James. This is a rather odd one; Enes Kanter and LeBron James started feuding in the past and it has turned into a bit of a bloodbath. The most recent swipe on social media in a trolling sense came in late November 2017. This was when LeBron was ejected for the first time in his career, and Kanter got quite saucy about it. From his arguments with Phil Jackson to this, LeBron has found social media trolling to be a bigger issue than many other modern sports stars!

Political Stances. The last couple of years has seen a massive outpouring of ‘politics and sport don’t mix’ from people, mainly from a more right-leaning political perspective. However, while sport and politics do mix quite clearly, the Cavaliers and the Warriors made a clear point of not going to visit the White House under President Donald Trump. As you can imagine, this ‘triggered’ plenty of people who thought it was disgraceful etc. and it created quite a storm on social media. From the players going down on one knee to protest the national anthem to the ignoring of calls to the White House, it’s interesting to see this explode.

Lavar Ball.

Lavar Ball has become a bit of an internet sensation recently with posting some comical trolling, alongside being a tremendous player. From him dunking on President Trump to talking himself up to be better than Michael Jordan, Ball has one a long way to create a rather comical profile from himself. It’s a very interesting path, if a little controversial!

Mia Khalifa’s Show & Tell. The Lebanese adult film star became a bit of a sensation in the last couple of years, but it’s her constant show and tell of the athletes who try use their celebrity to get into her life that’s become so comical!

Social media trolling, then, isn’t just reserved for angry, faceless losers sitting in basements handing out abuse to people they’d smile at in public. If anything, it’s become about far more than that; it’s now like a form of advertising for sports stars, as well as a means of showing that they have personality outside of their chosen profession. Personally? We love it!
