Citizen Of The Year?
Once a year, fashion magazine GQ releases a list of individuals who they believe are the "Men of the Year." The list is comprised of the current icons in fashion, athletics, politics, and other notable figures driving social trends. Those that make the list are typically celebrities and other well-known people of interest that have made an impact in their respective areas of expertise.
Colin Kaepernick - 2017 Citizen of the Year
Colin Kaepernick is a former NFL quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers who made a splash in the world of sports and politics when he took a knee during the National Anthem on the last game of the 2016 preseason. Since that first time back in early September of 2016, Kaepernick kneeled during the National Anthem for every game until his contract with the 49ers expired at the end of the season.
Since Kaepernick's time with San Francisco came to an end he has yet to be signed by another NFL Team. Although he is now currently a free agent, he has dedicated the majority of his time to a political agenda and what he believes is taking a stand against racism and inequality in the US. To date however, Kaepernick's most recognized statement/protest was his decision to kneel during the National Anthem back in 2016.
"I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color." -Colin Kaepernick
So, why is all this so important?
GQ Magazine is considered to be a legitimate publication stretching beyond the fashion and cultural commentary. With a substantial reader base that stretches outside the US and circulation in over 22 countries, GQ is not only considered to be THE fashion source for men, but it has also earned respect for its journalistic prowess. It is also considered a voice that puts it squarely in the camp of the world's most highly regarded publications and deemed a reliable news source.
With Colin Kaepernick being named GQ's Citizen of the Year, Kaepernick has been given a stronger claim to his protest, with a voice that is more accessible around the world.
The big debate is, and remains to be - does he deserve it? While it is true there are some that perceive Kaepernick as a patriot who is fighting for equal rights, there are others who believe that his protests are disrespectful to our nation's constitution and the soldiers that fought and died for the liberties we enjoy as US citizens.
So, the question comes to you, our FireWire readers. Does Colin Kaepernick deserve the title "Citizen of the Year?"
