We all know that professional athletes, especially some of sport's biggest names, can earn tremendously high salaries for what they do. And for many of those athletes, it gives them the opportunity to give back to those less fortunate than themselves. Some of the highest profile athletes have actually created their own foundations in an effort to support a number of important charitable causes. In the spirit of this holiday season, let’s take a look at some athletes who have not only gone out of their way to help others this holiday season, but throughout the year.

LeBron James is arguably the best basketball player in the world today, and possibly the best of all-time. He commands a massive salary and has many high profile endorsements. But early on in his career, he understood how fortunate he was, and with his mother, created the LeBron James Family Foundation. His foundation has done tremendous work raising money for a variety of charities and has allowed to give back to the city of Akron and it’s young people, always remembering his early roots.

James, along with all of his Cleveland Cavaliers teammates and coaches, recently made their annual hospital visit to the Cleveland Clinic Children's wing, handing out gifts to the young patients and being compensated with many smiles and memories.

Another high-profile NBA star who was happy to give back this holiday season was New Orleans Pelicans star, Anthony Davis. In a video that was posted to Twitter, Davis was seen handing out Christmas presents to a local family. He then presented the keys to a new SUV to the mother who was shocked, but also extremely appreciative. Davis followed that up by taking a group of young children to a local Target where they each received $200 to spend as well as tickets to a Pelicans game.

Also coming out of New Orleans is another athlete who is extremely involved in charitable causes. New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees. His Brees Dream Foundation, which was founded back in 2003, has contributed over 25 million to charitable causes globally since it initial launch. Just this week, Brees and his wife Brittany unveiled a new playground at Audubon Park in the city. The new Walnut Street Playground provides wheelchair-accessible equipment and promotes interactive physical, cognitive, visual and hearing experiences. Just another way to give back to those not as fortunate during this holiday season.

The list of kind acts continues with another NBA star happy to give back is Oklahoma City Thunder superstar, Russell Westbrook. Westbrook, like so many others, has created the foundation, the Russell Westbrook Why Not? Foundation. The mission is to inspire the lives of children and empower never give up on their dreams and always ask, Why Not? His foundation works hard to raise money as well as sponsor events aimed at improving the lives of as many children as possible.

Westbrook also donated a car to a young Oklahoma City mother this holiday season. He was looking for a recipient in the community who truly needed it and found that in a young woman who was juggling work, school and caring for her two young sons. The KIA SUV he donated was actually the car he received when he won the MVP award in the 2015 NBA All-Star game.

These are just a few of the professional athletes who consider themselves fortunate to be able to give back during this holiday season. You can be sure there are many more who not only donate money, but help to brighten someone’s day with an act of kindness.
